#5: October Travel Links
An old-school link roundup with my favorite things from around the internet
Hi there! I’m Jess 👋
Bureau of Adventure is a newsletter about the travel business and how to take better vacations.
This week, I’ll share some of my favorite travel-related things. I'm moving from New York to Los Angeles in a few days, and I’m in the middle of packing. It’s been a month since my last piece, and it’ll be another month before you’ll see a return to regular writing.
In the meantime, enjoy this old-school link roundup. I’ve been saving these up.
🤓 A few things from around the internet 🤓
✈️ 1950-70s Airline visual identities (15 min video) - this talk from Skift’s 2017 conference covers the design of some of the most iconic mid-century airlines.
😬 Vanity Fair on the Titan submersible disaster - long-read on the history of OceanGate, its founder, and the opinions of experts in the deep-sea community.
📐 How to Design an Airport (17 min video) - Peter Ruggiero is an architect who specializes in designing airports. In this video, he explains the history of airport design and design philosophies that have come and gone.
😴 The Case for Sabbaticals - this piece explores the advantages of rest and why more people don’t take extended time off. It’s certainly a privilege, but I wish everybody had the option. Society would be better off.
📰 News items that caught my attention 📰
👚 Rent clothes in your destination - Japan Airlines is testing a service that allows you to rent clothes after landing rather than bringing your clothes from home. The stated rationale is sustainability - less weight on planes equals less fuel burned. I’d love this idea to be expanded to other types of travel that require specialized clothing. What if you could rent warm-weather clothes for trips to Antarctica? Often people buy clothing for specific trips and never use them again.
🚄 New high-speed trains between Miami and Orlando - Last month, Brightline inaugurated frequent, 3.5 hour service from Orlando airport to downtown Miami. Plans are in the works to expand the Florida line to Tampa, and the company is planning a new route from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. I’m rooting for them.
✈️ United orders an additional 110 planes - the airline announced additional orders for 787s and A321s this week. United is definitely an airline to watch with a renewed focus on premium travelers and aggressive international expansion.
🗽 New York Tips 🗽
✉️ NYT Where to Eat Newsletter has practical, reasonably-priced, and just-plain-good recommendations for places to eat in the city. I recommend subscribing if you live here or visit often.
🍕 My favorite slice of pizza is L’Industrie in Brooklyn. Get the burrata slice. Perfectly crunchy crust, umami-good tomato, topped with basil, parmesan, and burrata. 🤌
☕ Dayglow Coffee opens in New York - this is an unusual coffee shop for two reasons: 1) coffee “cocktails” and 2) beans from international roasters in Europe and Asia. So fun!
📦 Travel Products I’m Excited About 📦
🚙 Bowlus high-end RV trailers - all-electric, cool design, enough said :)
🚤 EYOS book-by-the-cabin yacht expeditions - EYOS normally organizes expedition voyages for private yachts, but they have a few sailings where you can book an individual cabin. Trips are ~$35K vs ~$10K for a standard Antarctica cruise. On a yacht, you’ll only travel with 10 other people as opposed to 200.
🏠 Archimarathon architecture tours - intense, architecture-focused tours led by practicing architects (their instagram is great too). I love deeply-focused, expert-led tours like this. If you know of equivalent tours for other topics, send them my way!
That’s it for this week! Thanks for reading, and please reply to this email if you have any comments.
I’ll be back next month with more regular writing.
Awesome collection of interesting tidbits - Thanks!!
